The leaves are channeled and heavily armed with hooked marginal spines. In full sun the plant can be reddish or bronzy and at anthesis the center blushes red. The inflorescence is a short shape with a globose head of branches, very long, leaf like bracts and large, tubular flaring purple flowers. The head is coated with a layer of gold colored 'fur'.
